There is lots of evidence to suggest that rosemary is an effective and natural mild pain reliever. In a two-week study, stroke survivors with shoulder pain who received a rosemary oil blend with acupressure for 20 minutes twice daily experienced a 30% reduction in pain whilst those who received only acupressure had a 15% reduction in pain. An animal study also showed that rosemary oil was slightly more effective for pain than acetaminophen, a common over-the-counter pain medication.
German chamomile also contains chemicals that seem to promote relaxation and reduce swelling or inflammation. It is thought that German chamomile may reduce swelling by slowing the production of chemicals called prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and histamines. These chemicals are usually released to create a swelling response in the body.
Calendula is best known for its wound healing properties, but laboratory studies have identified naturally occurring chemicals in calendula that have anti-inflammatatory and skin-healing properties and that Calendula ointment applied to skin may reduce painful swelling and irritation associated with radiation therapy.
Lavender essential oil has been shown to be an effective analgesic and anti-inflammatory. Evidence shows that when diluted lavender essential oil was applied topically, it provided pain relief comparable to that of the prescription medication tramadol, suggesting that lavender could be used to help treat pain and any associated inflammation.
